Complimentary transit for Veterans on Warriors’ Day

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will be offering complimentary YRT/Viva and YRT Mobility Plus transit services to war veterans and immediate families of deceased veterans on Warriors’ Day, Saturday, August 16, 2008.

Veterans and one companion, as well as immediate families of deceased veterans, can travel all day, system-wide without charge.  Those wishing to use YRT Mobility Plus service must be registered Mobility Plus users.

Veterans can identify themselves to YRT/Viva drivers and fare inspectors by showing uniforms, medals, berets and blazers.  The immediate family of a deceased veteran may identify themselves with documents, including an identification card or service papers.

Warriors’ Day was established in 1921 through the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).  The Warriors’ Day parade often marks the opening of the CNE and is an opportunity to remember fallen heroes who served bravely in Canada’s military services defending the freedom of all Canadians.
